Emotional Balance is the ability of the mind and body to maintain equilibrium and flexibility in the face of challenge and change.
Sometimes we experience negative emotions such as anger, fear, worry, dissociation, self-sabotage or depression; agitation, impulsivity, anxiety, panic attacks and sleep trouble; lack of drive and motivation, or poor concentration. We cannot see these emotions but they can be very intense and take over our life’s, in some instances, even influencing the way we react, e.g. getting violent, loud, crying, all displays of emotions which might hinder our progress in life and give the wrong impressions about who we truly are.
So you ask, how do are get rid of these emotions, control them or find the most appropriate manner to respond to certain emotions? There is no cure for these emotions, doctors may give you pills to deal with depression but as soon as you’re off the pills, the depression is back again!
The Bible provides answers for everyone, even if you are not a Christian, there are life lessons that can be learnt from the Bible as well as from our simple existence on this Earth, some of which I find to be empowering life lesson are listed below . I hope that, some if not all of them can help in your time of need:
1. Developing Your Spirituality
At the core of every human being is a spiritual aspect, that part of us that we cannot see, describe or remove from our being yet we feel it- “that something” within us! We may have all the money in the world, fabulous physique, be well-connected to the most powerful individuals in the world but if “that something” within us is not fulfilled we continually feel a sense of being incomplete.
As a Christian developing my spirituality is about a closer with Christ, finding out who He wants me to become and how I can become the person He planned for me to be!
John 14:26 Galatians 5:22 – 23
2. Letting Go
Letting go of the negative stuff in our lives is much harder than letting go of positive things!! Sometimes we hold onto the past as an excuse for where we find ourselves in life currently, as if we moved from that negative state to where we are without being conscious that we are moving, it’s as if we had no say in how we move from the past to where we are!
There is a saying that goes something like this; “life is a journey, enjoy the ride”. I believe that in spite of where we are started we can end up in a better position, the past is not a dictator of where we end up and we need to let it go so that we can live in the present. The past is just that- THE PAST – it can no longer hurt us, it does not have control, it has no power in today and my future therefore I am not the past I am me at this present moment and I will be what He has planned for me in the future. I
Don’t hold yourself back by looking back and preventing yourself from moving towards your destiny in Christ, let go of your regrets!
3. Forgive Yourself
Forgiving someone else is difficult enough but forgiving yourself is worse – sometimes we bash ourselves over the head about this and that,” maybe I should have done it this way or that way, I’m not pretty enough, skinny enough, fat enough (yes there are those people!) but remember one thing – no-one is perfect on this earth. We need to cut ourselves some slack, others may have forgiven you but you still hold to something, sometimes you’re the only one thinking there is something to be forgiven – have you heard someone say to you “ I wasn’t even mad at you, I forgot about it a long time ago” and here you are still feeling bad and asking for forgiveness!!
God forgave us for EVERYTHING, forgive yourself as well!! You can’t begin to forgive others when you cannot forgive yourself for the mistakes you’ve made in life.
Isaiah 1:18 Ezekiel 18:22 Matthew 26:28
4. Take Care of Your Body
We heard so many times that our bodies are the temples of God, but how many of us really believe this? I think you just need to look around at those closest to you and yourself to find the answer to this question! We need to ensure what we put into our bodies will do good for us – eating healthily, making the right choices about the foods that are good for our bodies and families is critical to creating a temple worthy of God living there. Portion size control, healthy cooking – grill instead of frying in a gallon of oil, less starch and more veggies – the results will speak for themselves.
Exercise goes hand in hand with a healthy body and mind – you’ll be amazed at how energetic you feel from just a 20 minute walk and drinking lots of water, no costs involved here so no excuses about not affording the gym fees! This is the only body you have – take care of it!
1 Corinthians 6: 19 ; 1 Corinthians 3: 16-17
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
Clutter in your life makes for a very emotional roller-coaster ride! Clutter can come in the form of the type of relationships you have, friends in your life, the state of your home, your wardrobe, your finances, etc. We need to simplify our lives by getting rid of the clutter that does not bring value into our lives. That means getting rid of the toxic relationships you may have in the type of friends you hang around with, the quality of your relationships with your husband and family may need some spring-cleaning throughout the year it’s to improve. Finances are sometimes the source of 90% of the emotional imbalance we feel (anxiety, fear, stress) therefore we need to be wise in the natural and spiritual sense of our beings . If you can’t afford it, don’t get it now but save for it, commit your finances to the Lord before you start using them for your own needs, some people are against people tithes as a “rip-off” preachers have devised to get money from people but I’ve seen it work in my life so I highly recommend it!
Keep only those things and/or people in your life that add value!!!
